Abstract:
The management and applied psychology literature has embraced multilevel theory and analysis for three decades. Despite this long history, ambiguities still exist regarding the conceptual meaning and appropriateness of some multilevel models. In this presentation, I review the origin of such ambiguities and explain the contrasting views on the focal issues being debated. Moreover, I discuss how understanding these debates helps researchers to better utilize the more sophisticated techniques (e.g., random-intercept cross-lagged panel models and dynamic structure equation models) in their research. 

Short Bio:

Zhen Zhang is a Professor and O. Paul Corley Distinguished Chair at the Cox School of Business, Southern Methodist University. He received his Ph.D. degree in Human Resources and Industrial Relations from the Carlson School of Management, University of Minnesota. His research areas include leadership and teams, biological basis of work behavior, people side of entrepreneurship, and advanced quantitative research methods. His research has yielded 55+ scholarly publications and received media coverages from the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, Forbes, and the Economist. He is currently an associate editor at Personnel Psychology and serves on the editorial boards of five other academic journals including Academy of Management Journal and Journal of Applied Psychology.
