摘要
The importance of stakeholder engagement has received renewed energy in management practice and theory. Historically, within strategic management, research on stakeholder engagement has been broadly focused on the exchange of resources between two very similar actors with comparable values and motivations. However, in practice it is often the case that diverse actors may be motivated by very different instrumental and moral factors. Prior research suggests that a lack of shared values and/or motivations may foster mis/distrust, animosity, and thwart the likelihood of resource exchange. So, a question remains in the stakeholder engagement literature: given that firms and stakeholders often do not share similar norms, values, or instrumental goals, how is constructive stakeholder engagement still possible? We argue that productive relationships are possible and may thrive even in the absence of shared values and motivations. Our fundamental premise is that a shift in mindset and approach is needed for successful relationships in such circumstances. The concept of stakeholder humility captures this mindset and describes the ability of exchange partners to be steeped in an inward understanding and outward expression of themselves and their commitment to the relationship, even in the absence of overlapping values and motivations. We thus put forth a theory of stakeholder humility which is not just a theory of matching instrumental needs and resources between firms and stakeholders, but is also fundamentally an engagement approach based on recognizing diverse norms, values, and belief systems.
