2019 SYSBS METHODOLOGICAL WORKSHOP:

New Advancements in Longitudinal Panel Data Analysis

I、About Longitudinal Panel Data Methods

Organization sciences and management researchers are increasingly exposed to longitudinal panel data. However, prevailing methods are weak in drawing temporal-based causal inferences on such data. Moreover, longitudinal data are increasingly longer, for example, 15 or more repeated measurements are used in experience sampling studies and high-frequency measures (e.g., 100 or more repeated measures for a subject) are more and more available to researchers. Conventional longitudinal methods are cumbersome or impossible to analyze this type of intensive longitudinal data. This workshop introduces to researchers in China two new methods: general cross-lagged model and dynamic structural equation modeling that can effectively address these difficulties. We will use concrete examples from management and organizational literatures to illustrate how to apply these analytic approaches in researchers' own projects.

II、About the Workshop and Who Should Attend

This Workshop is the 9th annual workshop sponsored by SYSBS, featuring applications-oriented workshops focusing on the latest trends in organizational research methods. Led by two experts in the field, as the first national Workshop on New Advancements in Longitudinal Panel Data Analysis in Chinese, it aims to tutor Chinese scholars about emerging methods to analyze longitudinal panel data in management and other disciplines of business and social sciences. In addition, the instructors will demonstrate how to apply these methods in their research projects.

Reminder: Participants should be familiar with some common statistical methods including linear regressions, path analysis, and structural equation modeling. In addition, some knowledge of Bayesian statistical methods is recommended.

Guangzhou

Guangzhou is the capital of Guangdong Province. It is China's southern gateway to the world. It is the central city of Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau, the Pan Pearl River Delta economic zone and the hub city of "one belt and one road".

Guangzhou is a famous historical and cultural city. Since the Qin Dynasty, Guangzhou has been the administrative center of government. It has been the political, military, economic, cultural and scientific and educational center of South China, and the birthplace and prosperity of Lingnan culture. Guangzhou has been the main port of the Marine Silk Road since the third century, the largest port in China in the Tang and Song Dynasties, and the world-famous Oriental port city. In the Ming and Qing Dynasties, Guangzhou was the only major foreign trade port in China and the only one in the world that has been prosperous for more than 2000 years.

Sun Yat-sen University

Sun Yat-sen University, founded by Dr. Sun Yat-sen and with an educational tradition spanning over 100 years, is a preeminent research, academic and cultural center and the premier location for talent development in South China. Under the direct supervision of the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China, and strongly supported by both the Ministry and Guangdong Province, Sun Yat-sen University has developed into a modern comprehensive university that enjoys a reputation as a top-tier university nationally and a renowned university internationally. With five campuses in the three cities of Guangzhou, Zhuhai and Shenzhen, and ten affiliated hospitals, the University is striving to become a world-class university and global center of learning.

Business School, Sun Yat-sen University

Established in 1985, the Business School of Sun Yat-sen University (SYSBS) was instituted to offer a broad range of business degree programs. With the generous endowment of HK$20 million from the Ho's Education Foundation (its chairman at the time, the late Mr. Ho Sin Hang, was chairman of Hong Kong's Hang Seng Bank), SYSBS became the first business school in China to be instituted by an overseas foundation, and one of the first schools to be engaged in business education in Mainland China. Since its inception, SYSBS has not only continually received the support of the Ho's Education Foundation, but it has also attracted donations from other noted overseas foundations such as the Fok Ying Tung Foundation, the Peihua Foundation, and the Xiangjiang Foundation.

Today, SYSBS is regarded as a leading business education institution and is one of the four prestigious institutions throughout China to be conferred the National Key Discipline for Business Administration and the National Discipline for Management Science. In 2017, SYSBS’s Business Administration discipline has been selected as “Double First-Class” discipline by the Ministry of Education of China (MOE), “Double First-Class" initiative is a Chinese government’s plan to make China an international higher education power. In the same year, SYSBS’s Business Administration has also been rated as one of the four A+ disciplines in China by MOE. In November 2018, ARWU ranked SYSBS’s Business Administration discipline in the top 2 position in China. Internationally, SYSBS has been triply accredited by AMBA, EQUIS, and AACSB. Its EMBA was ranked #11 (2012) and Master’s in Management #44 (2013) worldwide by FT. For three consecutive years since 2016, the world-renowned prestigious magazine The Economists ranked the school’s MBA program among the world’s top 100 list, the only one business school in mainland China.
